MOON

The natural satellite of earth made visible by reflection of sunlight.

1.      the only place in our solar system, other than Earth, where humans have visited

2.      like a desert with plains, mountains, and valleys

3.      also has many craters, which are holes created when space objects hit the Moon's surface at a high speed

4.      no air to breathe on the Moon

5.      Recently water ice discovered at the poles of the Moon –may be left from comet that once collided with it

6.      travels around the Earth in an oval shaped orbit

7.      is much smaller than the Earth, however, the pull of its gravity can still affect the Earth's ocean tides

8.      Full lunar cycle –time it takes moon to orbit the earth- about 29.5 days, just under a month

9.      As moon orbits Earth, half illuminated by Sun first becomes increasingly visible (waxing), then decreasingly visible (waning)

10. Moon always keeps the same face (near side) toward the Earth.
