QUASAR

A star like object that gives off large amounts of energy.

1.      Belief that quasars are most distant objects yet detected in the Universe.

2.      give off enormous amounts of energy - they can be a trillion times brighter than the Sun

3.      believed to produce their energy from massive black holes in the center of the galaxies in which quasars are located.

4.      Because quasars are so bright, they drown out the light from all the other stars in the same galaxy.

5.      Despite  brightness, due to great distance from Earth, no quasars can be seen with an unaided eye.

6.      Energy from quasars takes billions of years to reach the Earth's atmosphere; the study of quasars can provide information about the early stages of the Universe.

7.      appear to be extremely energetic nuclei of galaxies that move away from us at incredible speeds, some travel up to 90% of the speed of light.

8.      In one second, typical quasar releases enough energy to satisfy Earth’s electrical energy needs for the next billion years.

9.      Most quasars are larger than our solar system.  A quasar is approximately 1 kiloparsec in width.

10. word quasar is short for "quasi-stellar radio source"-- name means star-like emitters of radio waves
