SATURN

Its rings are made of chunks of ice and rock that orbit Saturn.  Jupiter, Uranus and Neptune have rings too.  One of the largest moons in the solar system belongs to Saturn.  It is called Titan.

1.      The sixth planet from the Sun and the second largest next to Jupiter.

2.      Extensive ring system formed by a thousand individual rings – appear to contain water ice and dust, ranging in thickness from 10 to 100 meters and varying in brightness.

3.      Extremely high wind velocity on the surface, up to 1,100 miles per hour at the equator.

4.      Large white spots or clouds seen by astronomers thought to be interaction of winds banding together to cause storms.

5.      Spins rapidly on its axis (one rotation every 10 hrs. 39 min.), tending to flatten out the poles and cause a bulge at its equator.

6.      Has at least 18 known naturally occurring satellites (moons), some orbiting planet within the rings, creating gaps between them.

7.      Titan is largest moon- second largest in solar system, larger than Pluto and Mercury

8.      Gas planet with atmosphere composed of mostly hydrogen (75%) and smaller amounts of helium (25%).

9.      Has the lowest density of any planet in our solar system.  Density so low that it would float if placed in water.

10. Most of what we know about Saturn comes from close-range rendezvous with planet using spacecraft, including Voyager 1 and 2
